Getting the most for your dollars is always important when you are setting up a new laboratory or testing facility or if you are merely upgrading existing equipment. As technology changes there are a greater number of options that you may want to consider to add to the value of a UV lab spectrophotometer. These options will increase the usage for the equipment and help speed up tests, while ensuring the most accurate information is provided in the form of printed results.

The lab spectrophotometer is one instrument that needs to be calibrated between each use, so looking for a unit that offers an auto zero function is important. This function means that the system itself actually returns to zero when the sample is removed, ensuring that the next reading is accurate. Without this function there is always the option that busy technicians may forget to zero, resulting in errors in readings in subsequent samples.

Digital displays of the results of the photometric tests are also an important consideration. Digital displays mean that the data is easy to read and record even in less than perfect lighting conditions. Although this isn't typically a concern in a lab environment it is nice to know the display can easily be read even if the equipment is in a remote corner and not under direct lighting. Some newer models offer direct connection to computers, allowing data to be transferred and stored through the use of optional application software packages. Printers that are attached directly to the lab spectrophotometer will also provide an easy to print record of the test results, further decreasing the chance of any errors or mistakes in recording the data.

The sample compartments of most of the latest lab spectrophotometers are adjustable, allowing you to change the size of the sample compartment. This ability to adjust the size means that the sample can be easily tested as long as it fits into the container. Cell holders within the sample compartment can also be adjusted or may be varied, providing the most options for a wide variety of tests and cuvette holders. Other models may offer options such as V-type tube holders, which may be an important consideration depending on the needs of the lab.

Power requirements for the lab spectrophotometer will vary based on the specific model you are using. Some have switchable systems that can use 100V/50Hz or 230V/60Hz power sources, perfect for using in multiple settings.

Most UV laboratory spectrophotometers are going to have a bandpass of 5nm with single beam gyrating systems on the monochromator. In addition the wavelength range will change from model to model with variations from 190-1000 nm possible if necessary. The accuracy of these systems is incredible with ratings of plus or minus 0.0004 A, perfect for even the most detailed type of tests and recording.
