Unfortunately, a lot of medical equipment is not designed to make life easy for the medical professionals and patients who routinely use the device. While this may be true for many standard types of medical exam tables, hi low tables are just the opposite. They not only make patient exams and procedures more comfortable and stress free for the patient but they also help the staff as well. Gone is the need for difficult transfers of patients from wheelchairs to standard height tables and gone is the discomfort that many patients experience when they have to hop up to the exam table.
Hi lo tables have been popular for years in many specialized settings, but they are now becoming much more common in general practice settings. The style of the table is very minimal and it takes up a surprisingly small space in your office or examination room. Many models measure approximately 27 inches in width with a length of just over 58 inches without the extended foot section. With the foot section out, the measurement is the standard 70 inches. This adjustment makes the hi lo table practical even in smaller patient examination rooms.
The real time and effort saver for staff and patients is the power lift feature of the hi lo table. It can be lowered to 19 inches on many models, and some models, offer minimum heights of 17.5 inches. From this height off the floor transfers from wheelchairs are no different for the patient than transferring to a standard chair or bed height. This saves the patient from being stressed with having to move into a position that they are not normally in and it also saves staff from lifting or having to transfer the patient to a higher than the wheelchair position. Once the patient is in position on the hi lo table it can be raised using the electrical motor into the desired position for the examination or treatment. This can be done by either a hand operated control or a foot operated option. This feature entirely depends on the model of the table and the preference of the staff.
Hi lo tables come with a variety of options that include a stainless steel leg pullout and a fully removable upholstered leg cushion that fits onto the leg pullout. In addition stirrups are provided with the table that can be recessed when not in use. Other features include a hidden paper roll holder, ideal for easy paper changes and clean up between patients. Storage drawers in the hi lo table also help keep the office or examination room organized and neat, with all commonly used equipment or patient samples in easily accessible locations.
Different models of hi low tables offer even more specialized features. These can include left sided access to drawers and controls, additional storage space in cabinets under the table as well as safety grab bars for increased ease of patient transfer and support. These additional features are not available on all models, but by shopping around you can definitely find the hi low tables that meet your needs for your own unique practice.
