Wound gel is used to treat a variety of different wounds, lesions, ulcers, and chronic sores that are associated with diabetes and several other health conditions. It can also be used on cuts and injuries to the skin from rashes, bug bites, scratches, or from more significant skin tearing and sores. There are several different types of gel products on the market, but most have the same features and provide similar types of protection and healing. It is important to realize that wound gel is not meant to be a stand alone treatment, and if not effective at helping the minor wound to heal noticeably within a few days, a patient should seek immediate medical treatment. Wound gel is not appropriate for major wounds where there is significant tissue damage or loss of blood.
In general, wound gel provides a protective, hydrating, and lubricating layer over the wound that promotes healing. It can also help to absorb and draw exudate or liquid from the wound, allowing healing and preventing crusty deposits from collecting around the edges of the wound. These very tiny cellular debris will collect and slough off if not removed, which in turn can leave additional risks of scarring even with small wounds.
Some wound gels are water based and absorb rapidly into the wound tissue and form a thin layer of protection. Others may be very thick, and highly gelatinous types of gel that are more suited for deeper, larger wounds where frequent dressing changes are not recommended. Choosing one gel over the other is typically seen as a personal choice as well as one that is unique to each type of wound. Diabetics and those with chronic skin ulcers and conditions typically require the thicker types of gels while a smaller minor injury may be effectively treated with one or two applications of an lighter type of wound gel product.
All wound gels should contain some type of protective feature that helps reduce the risk of secondary types of bacterial infection. This is enhanced by the moisture barrier that protects the healing skin but it also should include additional protection that reduces the chance of microorganism growth. The product, when used in chronic wounds, also soothes and covers the healing tissue to prevent further damage. In addition many products focus in treatment of specific types of wounds and lesions, typically those considered to be high exudates wounds in home health care settings.
Wound gel, at least in home health care use with significant wounds and lesions, should always be covered with a dressing to keep it in place and provide additional protection to the wound itself. Over the counter home wound treatments may come in tubes or even sprays, and may contain additional soothing compounds such as aloe vera or other herbal treatments. If the wound doesn't heal with use or becomes larger or irritated, immediately discontinue use and seek medical attention immediately. This may indicate an allergic reaction to the product or, more likely, a secondary infection. Wound gel is very useful in soothing wounded skin. It is important to find the right type of gel for the wound you are treating, and to then follow the proper directions in order to allow for quick healing.
